Since 1985, we have attempted to grow more than 2000 different cultivars of rhododendron, of which more than 600 have flowered. Of those that have flowered and we have grown for at least 5 years, the following have done the best in our garden.

The 'truss' shown above consists of 6 flower buds where each bud contained 8 to 14 flowers. The plant is broadly upright reaching 6 feet in 10 years. The foliage is mildew resistant. Flower hardy to at least -14 F.

The plant was originally purchased in 1988 from Girard Nursery as Rhododendron vaseyi var. album in a combination package containing 12 deciduous azaleas seedlings, two each of R. viscosum, R. nudiflorum, R. calendulaceum, R. furbushii (R. bakeri X R. arborscens), R. vaseyi var. album, and Ilam crosses. Although the plants obtained as R. viscosum and R. nudiflorum appear to be true to label, the R. calendulaceum and R. vaseyi var. album seedlings did not. The purchased R. calendulaceum seedlings matured to plants looking similar in flower to R. 'Strawberry Ice'.

Clearly, Rhododendron 'Canobie Candy' is not a R. vaseyi. Its flower characteristics have much in common with R. roseum and/or R. nudiflorum. However the long narrow seed pods are held horizontal unlike those species.
